Legal Things

In a nutshell

It is quite easy and straightforward to marry in New Zealand.

You must have a Marriage licence to get married. You do this through Births, Deaths and Marriages.  You apply 3 months prior to your wedding date if you normally live in New Zealand or if you are flying into the country and will arrive more than 3 working days before you get married. A New Zealand marriage licence will cost you $150.00.

Both different and same sex marriages are legal in New Zealand.

You need to be married by a Registered Marriage Celebrant - that’s me folks!  Call me now, I would love to help.

During the ceremony, at some point you need to say “I (name) take you (name) to be my husband / wife" – or words to that effect.
